Abstract

Aluminum is an inorganic material that cannot be decomposed naturally in nature, even though its presence in our lives is very abundant and quite crucial. One of its uses is as a raw material for food or drink cans. Where in the United States alone in 2012 around 38.2 billion cans of food or drink were produced. Therefore, efforts are needed to reduce aluminum waste. One use that can be made is to extract the aluminum content in it to be used as raw material for alum coagulants and PAC. The aluminum that has been successfully extracted is then added to a solution which can cause polymerization and form alum and PAC coagulants. Next, the resulting synthetic coagulant was tested for its ability to reduce the turbidity of laundry waste. Laundry waste itself was chosen because waste processing is still simple and many studies have proven that commercial coagulants are able to help process laundry waste, especially in terms of waste turbidity and TSS (total suspended solids) parameters. Suspended laundry waste can appear from dirt that sticks to clothes and also the detergent used. In this research, coagulation and flocculation were carried out by taking 500 mL samples of laundry waste and synthetic coagulants at doses of 100 PPM, 200 PPM and 300 PPM. After the coagulation-flocculation process was carried out, the samples were deposited with varying settling times, namely 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. This research aims to find out the effectiveness of each artificial coagulant and the effect of the dose and settling time used. Apart from that, kinetic analysis was also carried out by finding out the reaction order from variations in the specified dose. From the research results, it is known that synthetic PAC coagulant is more effective than synthetic alum in reducing turbidity and TSS in laundry waste.
