Abstract

The utilization of biogas can help reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. The purpose of this research is to analyze the influence of biological (civet feces) and chemical (NaOH solution) pretreatment of coffee husk substrate with a mixture of cattle rumen in producing biogas and to determine the optimal substrate composition in producing biogas. Cattle rumen bacteria were added to the digestion to initiate the fermentation process. The fermentation process took 35 days, with sampling intervals at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days. Total solids (TS) and methane (CH4) measurements were used in biogas testing. Findings indicate that biological, chemical, and no pretreatment on coffee husk in the experiment have an impact on the generated biogas (CH4). The highest methane gas was produced in the biological pretreatment process (civet feces) with a value of 42.3724% at the 28th day of fermentation. Meanwhile, the lowest methane gas was produced in the process without pretreatment with a value of 6.38433% at the 7th day of fermentation. The optimal substrate composition in producing biogas (CH4) was found to be at a composition of 50% coffee husk + 25% cattle rumen + 25% water. According to this research, initial biological treatment of coffee husk substrate can enhance biogas production, which might be a viable way to sustainably manage coffee husk waste and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Keywords: Biogas, Pretreatment, Coffee Husk, Civet Feces, NaOH Solution.
