Abstract

Domestic wastewater is a source of pollution for waters. This wastewater contains organic materials and ammonia. Biological treatment such as aerobic biofilters can be used to degrade organic materials and ammonia. The aerobic biofilter will be combined with intermittent aeration to maximize the nitrification and denitrification processes. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the domestic wastewater treatment process using an aerobic biofilter combined with intermittent aeration to reduce COD and total nitrogen parameters. There are two variations used, namely media type and intermittent aeration time ratio. The media used are bioball and bioring. Meanwhile, the intermittent aeration time ratio used is 6.5:1.5 hours (6.5 hours oxic-1.5 hours anoxic); 6:2 hours (6 hours oxic-2 hours anoxic); 5.5:2.5 hours (5.5 hours oxic-2.5 hours anoxic); and 5:3 hours (5 hours oxic-3 hours anoxic). Intermittent aeration with a duration of oxic 6.5 hours - anoxic 1.5 hours applied to aerobic biofilter with bioball media optimum reduces COD and total nitrogen parameters. COD removal efficiency reached 83.3% and total nitrogen removal reached 87.7% Keywords : Biofilter, Domestic Wastewater, Oxic and Anoxic, COD, Total Nitrogen
