Abstract

Wastewater from batik home industries is generally discharged directly into the water without proper treatment, resulting in massive levels of pollutant parameters such as color, TSS, and COD. This research will explore the use of natural polyelectrolytes extracted from white leg shrimp shells as coagulants in an effort to remove color, TSS, and COD parameters in batik wastewater from home industries in Sidoarjo city. Experiments in this study include the extraction process of polyelectrolyte chitosan from white-leg shrimp shells, testing coagulants in batik wastewater in various variations, and analyzing the pH, stirring speed and optimum dose of coagulants in reducing the pollutant load contained in wastewater. The results showed that the coagulant made was effective in removing these pollutant parameters with a significant removal rate in wastewater with pH 5 and stirred at 90 RPM. Furthermore, the optimum dose recorded for reducing color, TSS, and COD parameters, was at a dose of 200 mg/l. The most optimal removal in this study was not able to meet the required quality standards for color, TSS, and COD parameters. However, the coagulants studied can be stated to be able to compete with the many natural coagulants available.
