Abstract
Most home laundry businesses dispose of their wastewater directly into bodies of water without prior treatment. This can lead to pollution as the laundry wastewater contains pollutant parameters such as BOD, COD, Phosphate, TSS, that came from the raw materials or building ingredients of the detergent and from the particles shed during the washing of clothes. Pistia Stratiotes or well known as Kayu Apu with its fibrous root system and fine root hairs enables the growth of microorganisms in the rhizosphere that capable for degrading both organic and inorganic substances found in the wastewater. After the organic and inorganic substances have been broken down and transformed into simpler compounds, the plants will adsorb them as a source of nutrients. Kayu Apu are also known for their relatively good hyperaccumulation capabilities. Aeration is also employed to ensure the supply of oxygen required by microorganisms for the degradation of the pollutants in the wastewater. The objective of this study is to assess the Kayu Apu's ability to reduce pollutant levels, namely BOD, COD, TSS, and Phosphate. Additionally, the study aims to determine which aeration variation, either continuous aeration for 24 hours or intermittent aeration for 10 hours, has the most significant impact on the removal of BOD, COD, TSS, and Phosphate in the wastewater. The results of this study indicate that the most effective treatment was continuous aeration for 24 hours, resulting in removal percentages of 85.71% for BOD, 97% for COD, 46.15% for TSS, and 84% for Phosphate. Keywords: Free Floating Plant Wetland, Continuous Aeration, Intermittent Aeration, Laundry Wastewater.
