Abstract

Domestic wastewater contributes 60% to water pollution, mainly because households dispose of their waste into drainage channels. Domestic wastewater contains organic and inorganic pollutants such as BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia. Biological treatment can reduce the pollutant levels in domestic wastewater by using Chlorella sp. and Spirulina platensis in suspension and attached form biofilm on Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR). This study aims to test and determine the effectiveness of MBBR with Chlorella sp. and Spirulina platensis in domestic wastewater treatment. This study focuses on the role of microalgae biofilm in reducing the concentration of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and ammonia in domestic wastewater. This study uses a batch method with Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) Chlorella sp. and Spirulina platensis with different volumes of kaldness 3 media (10%, 20%, and 30%) and different retention times (8 hours, 24 hours, 60 hours, and 120 hours). The research results show that the highest formation of Chlorella sp. microalgae biofilm occurred in reactor C7 (20% kaldness) with a cell density of 10.630x104 cells/mL at a residence time of 60 hours (2.5 days). The biofilm formed on Spirulina platensis was on the water surface and could not adhere to the kaldnesss. Reactors with Chlorella sp. had the best removal ability compared to control reactors and Spirulina platensis. The highest removal occurred in reactor C7 (kaldness 20%) with a BOD removal percentage of 94% with a residual ammonia level of 10.56 mg/L and Ammonia of 98.84% with a residual ammonia level of 0.048 mg/L at a retention time of 60 hours (2.5 days).
