Abstract
So far, cassava utilization in Indonesia still focuses on the tuber part, while cassava skin is often only a waste that has not been optimally utilized. Cassava skin has a high cellulose content, so it has the potential to be used as an alternative raw material in the manufacture of oxalic acid. This study aims to obtain oxalic acid with the highest content and determine a stable pH value based on the best temperature and time variations in the alkaline melting process. Making oxalic acid from cassava peel begins with alkaline melting, where cassava peel powder is mixed with KOH solution. The resulting filtrate is then added to a 10% CaCl₂ solution, and the precipitate formed is acidified using H₂SO₄ and filtered to obtain an oxalic acid filtrate. The filtrate was then analyzed using the permanganometric titration method and a pH meter. This study applied temperature variations of 100, 120, 140, 160, and 180°C and melting times of 70, 75, 80, 85, and 90 minutes. The results showed that the best conditions were obtained at a temperature of 160°C with a melting time of 85 minutes, producing an oxalic acid content of 15.7% from 5 grams of cassava peel powder with a cellulose content of 48.17%.
