Abstract

Social media platforms have now become a necessity for the community, especially since Indonesians aged around 18-24 can spend up to three hours and 26 minutes a day. The existence of various kinds of social media makes a place for users to interact with other users. Tiktok is one of the most downloaded social media platforms, with as many as 1.4 billion active users aged 18 and over globally. The convenience provided by TikTok allows the Discite Institute community to utilize TikTok as a medium for self- development for their followers. This study aims to find out how to use the @discite.institute community TikTok account as a medium for self-development. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method and virtual ethnography as a research methodology. Data mining was obtained from online searches, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The theory used in this research is computer mediated communication. The results of this study indicate that uploaded content on the TikTok account @discite.institute has the theme of educational content and interesting facts that have a positive impact on the self-development of the informants. The content is packaged well and easy to understand so that the informants are able to absorb and apply the knowledge gained in their daily lives. Keyword: TikTok, self improvement, computer mediated communication, virtual etnography.
