Abstract

Communication has a close relationship with social interactions carried out with other individuals. The communication carried out can form an established communication pattern. Likewise, the family is the first group in the social and communication sphere. However, sometimes there is a phenomenon of single mothers, the loss of a father figure means that mothers have to be able to carry out multiple roles in the family, making single mothers have to be able to guide and protect their children extra, especially for teenage children who need physical and mental support, the presence of emotional changes such as attraction to the opposite sex makes children will arouse curiosity and even create a romantic relationship. Considering the widespread news about children who lack attention to the point of being deviant, what is needed is for children to open themselves to their mothers regarding romantic relationships, even if the child will reveal his personality regarding romantic relationships. The research uses qualitative descriptive methods. Data collection methods used were identification interviews, in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The research was analyzed using Fitzpatrick's family relationship schema theory on comprehensive family communication patterns in pluralistic, consensual, protective, and laissez-faire patterns. Meanwhile, for self-disclosure in Altman and Taylor's social penetration theory, to find out which layers the child will open up to based on the depth of information given to the mother. This research shows that teenage children in Surabaya tend to close themselves off due to a lack of openness to their mothers. Children will feel comfortable when they are paid more attention, heard, and supported. In addition, several factors of fear and shame and even harbored feelings make children uncomfortable talking to their mothers. And it was found that several topics made children open and not open with their mothers.
