Abstract
An alternative to the use of conventional plastic is the use of biodegradable plastic. Biodegradable plastic is made from natural polymers such as starch, cellulose, and fats. In its production, other materials are added, including chitosan as an adhesive and plasticizer as a plasticizer. The aim of this research is to determine the optimal composition of bioplastic materials so that they have mechanical properties, physical properties, and biodegradability in accordance with applicable bioplastic standards. This research used starch extracted from banana peels, with variations in the addition of chitosan (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 grams) and variations in the addition of sorbitol as a plasticizer (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ml). The biodegradable plastic was made by mixing each ingredient and heating it at a temperature of 60°C for 1 hour, followed by molding on glass plates and baking for 5-6 hours. The results obtained were tested for tensile strength, elongation using ASTM D638 standards as a reference, and the ability to degrade. The best biodegradable plastic was obtained with a composition of 4 grams of starch, 5 grams of chitosan, and 6 ml of sorbitol, where the tensile strength value was 49.9380 MPa, elongation was 68.28%, and the ability to degrade reached 100% in the third week after being buried in the soil.
