Abstract

Surface water contains many solid substances in the form of suspended or colloidal particles which can cause turbidity in water so that it is not fulfill quality standards and not suitable for use as clean water. Solid substances can be set aside by the coagulation-flocculation process, where there is the addition of chemicals to form floc. The hydraulic coagulation-flocculation process is a stirring process that utilizes water flow as a mixer because of the presence of hydraulic energy. Circular pipe has the advantage of being able to save space. Gravel bed flocculator has ability to shorten the flocculation time (3-5 minutes). In this study, variations applied were coagulant doses (55, 65, 75, 85, and 95 (mg/L)), contact time for flocculation (3 minutes, 4 minutes, and 5 minutes), and the height ratio gravel media size of 20 mm: 30 mm (2: 1 and 1: 2) to determine the effect on removal of total suspended solid (TSS) and turbidity. The results showed optimum hydraulic stirring at a coagulant dose of 95 mg / L, flocculation contact time of 5 minutes, and height ratio of gravel media size of 20 mm: 30 mm (1: 2) capable of removing a total suspended solid (TSS) content of 83.22% and turbidity 92.06%. Keywords: Circular Pipe, Gravel Bed Flocculator, Coagulation-Flocculation Process
