Abstract
An Alkylbenzene Sulfonate factory with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes/year will be established in Cilegon, West Java. The factory will operate 24 hours a day for 330 days a year. The Alkylbenzene Sulfonate Factory uses raw materials in the form of alkylbenzene which comes from PT. Unggul Indah Cahaya and oleum 20% from PT. Indonesian Acid Industry located in Cilegon City. Alkylbenzene sulfonate is the main raw material in the detergent industry. The use of Alkylbenzene sulfonate can also be found in the cleaning industry such as dish washing soap and mop soap. Alkylbenzene Sulfonate can be produced using several types of processes, such as sulfonation with sulfuric acid, sulfonation with sulfur trioxide gas, and sulfonation with 20% oleum. At this factory, alkylbenzene is processed using the sulfonation method with 20% oleum. Alkylbenzene and 20% oleum are heated first with a heat exchanger to a temperature of 50ºC before being reacted in a CSTR type sulfonation reactor with atmospheric pressure. Then the alkylbenzene sulfonate formed is cooled to 32ºC and separated between the alkylbenzene sulfonate content and sulfuric acid using a decanter. The separated sulfuric acid is collected into a holding tank as a by-product. The alkylbenzene sulfonate is then reheated to a temperature of 55ºC and reacted with sodium hydroxide in a neutralization reactor. The linear alkylbenzene sulfonate formed is cooled to 32ºC and separated from sodium sulfate using a decanter. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate with a content of 95% is stored in the product storage tank.
