Abstract
In February 2023, an incident occurred where a Susi Air plane with flight number SI 9368 was sabotaged by the TPNPB-OPM group. The TPNPB-OPM also held Philip Mehrtens hostage with the aim of pressuring Indonesia and other countries to engage in discussions about the independence of Papua. Consequently, the Indonesian government initiated negotiations with the TPNPB-OPM to save the pilot's life. In this event, the media played a significant role in framing the news and shaping public perspectives. This research aims to examine how Suara Papua and Kompas.com framed this negotiation process. The study employs Robert N. Entman's framing analysis, which involves four elements: define problems, diagnose causes, make moral judgments, and treatment recommendations. It utilizes a qualitative research method, collecting data by analyzing the coverage of the Susi Air pilot hostage negotiation in both media outlets from March to July 2023. The research reveals differences in how the two media outlets framed their reporting. Suara Papua emphasized the need for Indonesia to prioritize peaceful diplomatic approaches to save the pilot, while Kompas.com reported that Indonesia had made every peaceful effort possible to secure the pilot's release.
