Abstract
Conventional plastic is a plastic with a high usage value in society can actually pollute the environment because it low degradation ability it is difficult to biodegrade in nature. An alternative solution is to use environmentally friendly plastic (biodegradable) with manufacturing materials that contain natural polymeric materials (starch) one of which can use waste materials (potato skins). With the addition of chitosan as an amplifier, glycerol as a plasticizer and CMC as a stabilizer so that this biodegradable plastic is more feasible to be applied. The ratio of chitosan: starch composition in this study is 10: 0, 3: 7, 5: 5, 7: 3, 0:10. For the glycerol variation 4 mL, 5 mL, 6 mL and the CMC are 0.5 gr, 1.5 gr, 2.5 gr. The best research results visually biodegradable plastic (color and texture) on the composition of chitosan: potato skin starch (5: 5) and glycerol 5 mL, but for the best visual elasticity with the addition of 6 mL glycerol and 2.5 gr CMC. For biodegradation test results showed the optimum composition with 10 gr starch (chitosan 0 gr), 6 mL glycerol and 2.5 gr CMC that is equal to 29.23% for 9 days. For the results of water solubility test with stirring showed the optimum composition of starch 7 gr, chitosan 3 gr and glycerol 6 mL that is 12 seconds. And for the water solubility test without stirring, it showed that the plastic layer could be dissolved in the optimum composition of 7 gr starch, chitosan 3 gr, glycerol 6 mL and 2.5 g CMC results, which were 1-2 hours after being put into the water. Both of these test results are due to the higher composition of glycerol and CMC, the biodegradable plastic will be degraded faster at the time being. Keywords: biodegradable plastic, potato skin starch, glierol, CMC, biodegradation, water solubility
