Abstract

Increasing the productivity of cayenne pepper can be done through the assembly of superior varieties. This study aims to determine the growing power and yield potential of cayenne pepper mutants (M4) compared to comparison varieties. This research was conducted in Jiwut Village, Nglegok District, Blitar Regency using a Randomized Complete Group Design (RAKL), consisting of 9 mutants, control plants (without irradiation), and two comparison varieties (ORI 212 and Bara) which were repeated 3 times so that there were a total of 144 sample plants. Observation characters include Vegetative Phase (plant height, number of leaves, number of productive branches) and Generative Phase (flowering age, number of flowers, fruit set, harvest age, number of fruits, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit weight per fruit, yield per period, total fruit weight, potential yield per hectare). Data were analyzed by variance (ANOVA) with 5% BNJ further test. The results showed that the M4 cayenne pepper mutants coded MV2, MV5, MV6 and MV8 had superior plant height, number of productive branches, fruit weight per plant, and yield potential per hectare compared to the two comparison varieties. All M4 cayenne pepper mutants tested except for the mutant coded MV3 have hope for selection in the next generation because they are able to show results that can match and even be better than the two comparator varieties.
