Abstract

Tobacco is commonly utilized only for its leaves as a raw material for cigarettes, while its stems become agricultural waste that is left to accumulate and burned. However, tobacco stems also contain nicotine, although the nicotine content is not as high as that in tobacco leaves. Many studies have extracted nicotine from tobacco stems using maceration and soxhlet extraction methods, but these methods have not been able to produce good nicotine extracts because nicotine itself begins to deteriorate at temperatures of 100℃. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct testing on tobacco stem extraction using the latest methods capable of producing more nicotine extract. Hence, research titled "Extraction of Nicotine from Tobacco Stems Using Ultrasonic Method" was conducted. This study aims to determine the best extraction method for extracting nicotine from tobacco stems, as well as to determine the best extraction time and temperature for nicotine extraction from tobacco stems. The extraction was carried out by preparing 50 grams of tobacco stems that had been reduced in size to 60 mesh and then extracting the tobacco stem powder using 96% alcohol solvent with the ultrasonic extraction method. The extraction was performed with time variables of 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, and 30 minutes, with temperature variables of 40℃, 50℃, 60℃, 70℃, and 80℃. Based on this research, the lowest nicotine content was obtained at the extraction variable with a temperature of 40℃ and extraction for 10 minutes with a nicotine content produced at 7.47%. For the highest nicotine extraction result, it was found at the extraction variable with a temperature of 80℃ and extraction for 30 minutes with a nicotine content produced at 30.91%. Acknowledgments: Nicotine, Ultrasonic, Tobacco.
