Abstract

The application styrofoam as a place to serve food is very dangerous because styrofoam contains materials such as styrene, benzene, and CFC (Chloro Fluorocarbon). Styrofoam also difficult to decompose naturally, so it is not environmentally friendly. Replacing styrofoam with biodegradable foam is one way to reduce application styrofoam. Biodegradable foam makes from natural ingredients, like cellulose and starch. The purpose of the research is to determine the effect of molding temperature and the addition of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and to get optimum conditions of molding temperature and PVA addition. The method used in the biodegradable foam printing process is the thermopressing method with the variables is variations in molding temperature (140, 150, 160, 170 and 180oC) and variations addition of PVA (5; 7.5; 10; 12.5; and 15 %) with b/b cassava flour. The manufacturing process begins delignification straw then cellulose straw added with cassava flour, PVA, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, and aquadest. Mix ingredients using mixer into a dough, put the dough into the thermopressing tool. Based on research, the best biodegradable foam results temperature of 180oC and PVA 15%, obtained biodegradable foam water absorption is 18.45%, biodegradation is 33.6547% for 12 days, and tensile strength is 4.257 N/mm2.
