Abstract

Areca nut (Areca catechu L.) is a plant that has many The benefits are mainly in the fruit but the betel nut skin is only considered as waste. Areca nut skin has a relatively high cellulose content which can be utilized, one of which is in the manufacture of cellulose acetate. This research aims to obtain cellulose acetate from areca nut skin and looking for the best conditions based on variations in acetylation time and acid volume glacial acetate. The process of making cellulose into cellulose acetate is done in 2 ways stages, where the first stage is cellulose isolation and the second stage is acetylation. The acetylation process is carried out by reacting the cellulose made from areca nut peel and glacial acetic acid in a glass beaker using a stirrer. The process consists of several stages. The first stage is making cellulose which is then purified. Stage the second is to dissolve cellulose in phosphoric acid and acetylate it cellulose with glacial acetic acid and the product recovery stage by means filtering and drying. In the research, the influence of time will be studied acetylation 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes and 25 minutes with administration the volume of 98% glacial acetic acid is 20 ml, 40 ml, 60 ml, 80 ml and 100 ml on the acetyl content of cellulose acetate. From the results of this research, the largest acetyl content was 28.09% acetylation time 15 minutes with a volume of 60 ml of glacial acetic acid.
