Abstract

Shrimp shell and egg shell waste has so far only been considered rubbish and has not been processed optimally. Shrimp shells contain chitin which can be made into chitosan which is able to absorb heavy metals. Egg shells have quite high levels of calcium so they have the potential to be used as an absorbent or adsorbent. The aim of this research is to test the effectiveness of a mixture of chitosan and egg shells as an adsorbent in reducing heavy metal (Pb) levels. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, the effect of adsorption time on the percentage of absorption of Pb metal content was obtained with variations in adsorption time of 15, 30, 60 and 120 minutes and with the adsorbent composition (1) 100% chitosan; (2) chitosan 75% + egg shell 25%; (3) chitosan 50% + egg shell 50%; (4) chitosan 25% + eggshell 75% and (5) eggshell 100%. Determining the effect of adsorption time aims to find the best time for the Pb metal adsorption process using chitosan and eggshell adsorbents. The best percentage of Pb metal absorption was with the addition of 9 grams of chitosan and with an adsorption time of 120 minutes. The relationship between adsorption time and the addition of the adsorbent mixture is directly proportional. The longer the adsorption time, the greater the percentage of absorption of the heavy metal Pb. This is because the contact time is not enough for the functional groups of the adsorbent to interact with the metal in solution and it has not yet reached a constant state.
