Abstract

The Titanium Dioxide Factory from Mineral Ilmenite and Sulfuric Acid with a Sulfate Process with a capacity of 90,000 tons/year will be built in the Mariana Ilir Industrial Area, South Sumatra. This plant operates 24 hours a day and 330 days a year with 98% (w/w) sulfuric acid and mineral ilmenite as raw materials. Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula TiO2 which can be used in the paint, paper, ceramics and chemical industries as a catalyst and in cosmetics and other products. The process of making titanium dioxide is divided into 3 stages, namely the raw material control stage, the process reaction stage, and the product control stage. In the first stage 98% Sulfuric Acid in the storage tank will be pumped into the dilution tank to be diluted up to 92% and then pumped to the heater to be heated up to 150oC while the ilmenite mineral will flow into the ball mill to reduce the size to ±200 mesh. In the second stage there were 4 processes, the first was sulfatase where the ilmenite mineral was extracted with the help of sulfuric acid 3 times, the process had operating temperatures of 150oC, 100oC and 70oC and conversions were 54%, 70% and 95% respectively. The second is crystallization where to crystallize side products that interfere with the titanium hydrate process with a crystallization temperature of 30oC. Then the hydrolysis process where the results of the crystallization are hydrolyzed to obtain titanium hydrate and titanium sulfate precipitates at a temperature of 90oC. The last process is calcination where titanium hydrate is converted into titanium dioxide with the help of a rotary kiln at a temperature of 800oC. So that at the control stage the titanium dioxide solid product is cooled to 40oC with a rotary cooler and cooling conveyor at 30oC then stored in a powder-shaped storage silo.
