Abstract

Factory of Titanium Dioxide from Mineral Ilmenite and Sulfuric Acid with Sulfate Process with a capacity of 80,000 tons/year will be built in the Area Mariana Ilir Industry, South Sumatra. This factory operates 24 hours in a day and 330 days a year with 98% sulfuric acid as raw material (w/w) and the mineral ilmenite. Titanium dioxide is an inorganic compound which has the molecular formula TiO2 which can be utilized in the paint industry, paper, ceramics as well as in the chemical industry as catalysts and cosmetics and products other. The process of making titanium dioxide is divided into 3 stages namely raw material control stage, process reaction stage, and control stage product. In the first stage 98% Sulfuric Acid in the storage tank will be pumped into the dilution tank to be diluted to 92% and then pumped into the heater to be heated up to 150C meanwhile ilmenite minerals will flow into the ball mill to reduce the size to ±200 mesh. In the second stage, the first 4 processes occur where sulfatase ilmenite mineral extracted with the help of sulfuric acid 3 times the process has an operating temperature of 150C, 100C, and 70C and conversion successively by 54%, 70%, and 95%. The second is crystallization where for crystallize by-products that interfere with the hydrate titanium process with crystallization temperature of 30C. Then the process of hydrolysis which results The crystallization was hydrolyzed to obtain a precipitate of titanium hydrate and titanium sulfate at 90C. The last process is calcination where the titanium hydrate is converted into titanium dioxide with the help of a rotary kiln at 800C. So that at the stage of solid product control titanium dioxide is cooled to 150C by rotary cooler and cooling conveyor at 30oC then stored in a shaped container silo powder.
