Abstract
Until now, the fuel crisis is starting to be felt and the selling price is also increasing. Renewable alternative energy sources are biomass which can be obtained from organic materials bioethanol. Bioethanol is ethanol obtained from fermentation made from sugar simple starch and cellulose. One type of starch that can produce bioethanol with levels high is millet. Millet is a cereal plant that has 3 types of plants. In this study, white millet (proso millet) was chosen as the ain raw material for bioethanol production because has a starch content of 56.53% which has not been utilized to become bioethanol. which process used in this research is enzymatic hydrolysis with liquefaction stage, process fermentation using zymomonas mobilis bacteria and also distillation process. starch content in proso millet seeds will be converted into glucose through the process of hydrolysis by liquefaction using alpha-amylase enzyme at 90°C for 60 minutes. the resulting glucose then continued with the fermentation stage using zymomonas mobilis bacteria with variables fermentation time (hours) 144; 168; 192; 216 and 240 as well as the variable concentration of zymomonas mobilis (% v/v) 11; 13; 15; 17 and 19. Then proceed with the distillation stage to obtain levels pure bioethanol at 78°C for 60 minutes. This research aims to produce bioethanol with various concentrations of zymomonas mobilis bacteria and fermentation time as well as for determine the effect of the best fermentation time and concentration of zymomonas mobilis on levels produced bioethanol. The results obtained in this study for the starch content of proso millet seeds amounted to 57.3497% and glucose levels of 17.6224%. The best bioethanol content in this study was 96.591% in the 168 hour fermentation process with the concentration of zymomonas mobilis used by 15% v/v. From these results it can be seen that at the beginning of the fermentation process until reach the maximum point of the best results, namely fermentation for 168 hours with concentration zymomonas mobilis at 15% v/v obtained a relationship between fermentation time and the concentration of zymomonas mobilis to the level of bioethanol produced is directly proportional. The longer the fermentation time and the higher the concentration of zymomonas mobilis used the higher the level of bioethanol produced.
