Abstract

Oxalic acid is chemical compound that belongs to the simplest dicarboxylic acid and distributed in the form of potassium and calcium salts found in leaves, roots, and rhizomes. Oxalic acid is used as an ingredient for making explosives and anti-corrosive coatings One of the ingredients for making oxalic acid is bagasse. This study aims to find the solvent concentration and melting time that produce the highest oxalic acid content. The method used is alkaline melting process. First the bagasse was washed, dried, and pulverized to 100 mesh. Take 30 grams of bagasse powder and add NaOH solvent with a concentration of 1.5; 3; 4.5; 6; and 7.5N as much as 500ml. The mixture was heated at 100°C for 30, 45, 60, 75, and 90 minutes, and stirred at 250rpm. The melted product was filtered, then the filtrate was added with CaCl2. The precipitate formed was dissolved with H2SO4, then filtered to take the filtrate as oxalic acid product, analyzed for its content. Based on the results of the study, the highest oxalic acid content was in the melting process with a concentration of 6N NaOH with a melting time of 75 minutes, which amounted to 20.2%.
