Abstract

The Republic of China (ROC) and the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) relations was mainly translated into tension, competition, and less compassion. Even though the two states both shared identity and history as “China”, but they unable to find a Nash equilibrium to articulate those parities into a peaceful coexistence. This situation exists because instead of peacefully shared similarities as “China”, the ROC and PRC both practiced ambitious claim that there’s only one China. With this status quo, foreign nations throughout the world need to decide whether to establish diplomatic ties with the ROC or the PRC. Small islands of the Pacific Countries such as Nauru was one of the countries that need to choose side between the ROC and PRC by weighing the benefit of joining one and the cost of leaving other. However, amid the derecognition waves to the ROC since 1971 and the economic boom of the PRC, Nauru chose to ally with the ROC rather than the PRC instead. The researcher suggest that this move was made considering the small state’s behavior of Nauru that tend to avoid conflict in cooperation. To justify the claim, the researcher will examine the case with theoretical approaches using the Complex Interdependence theory. This explanatory research will be signified by the use of secondary data collected from 1999-2005 that utilized under the qualitative research framework. All data and analysis written in this thesis are subjected to the research’s main argument and linked back to the creation of the Zone of Peace between the states. Keywords: One China, Struggle for Recognition, Symmetric, Asymmetric, Interdependence, Zone of Peace.
