Abstract

Commercial production and marketing of precipitated silica is sold in solid form with a purity level of 95%. Precipitated silica is an intermediate material needed by the rubber industry, such as silicone, vehicle tires and shoes; paint industry; ink industry and pesticide industry. To meet the demand for precipitated silica in Indonesia, a precipitated silica factory is being designed with raw materials of sulfuric acid and sodium silicate which is planned to be built in 2026. This plant uses an acidification process by reacting sulfuric acid and sodium silicate solution. The addition of sulfuric acid will cause a decrease in the degree of acidity of the alkali silicate solution, followed by the formation of precipitated silica. The reactor used is a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) with a conversion of 95% at a reactor operating condition of 90°C and a pressure of 1 atm. The output of the reactor will be separated between the filtrate and the cake in the rotary drum vacuum filter, where the cake will be further processed in the rotary dryer to reduce the water content in the product. The final stage of this processing is the process of reducing the product before entering the packing unit. Based on the domestic need for precipitated silica, which has been imported so far, it is planned to build a factory in 2026 in the KIEC Cilegon Industrial Area, Banten with a capacity of 80,000 tons/year with a total capital investment of Rp. 989,818,895,113,-. Based on economic analysis, this factory can be declared feasible from the value of Return On Investment (ROI) before tax of 29,536% and ROI after tax of 22,152% with an annual net profit value of Rp. 219,264,784,181,-. The Pay Back Period (PBP) is 3 years 9 months. Break Even Point of 30.8% capacity. Based on the description above, a precipitated silica plant from sulfuric acid and sodium silicate with an acidification process capacity of 80,000 tons/year is feasible to build.
