Abstract

Butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata Durch.) is an introduced pumpkin plant from the lowlands of South America. Butternut squash is related to yellow pumpkin, but it has several advantages, such as higher sweetness level and longer shelf life (up to 6 months). The orange color in the butternut squash contains high levels of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that can help reduce the risk of cancer. Butternut squash also contains B-complex vitamins and is high in fiber. Factors to consider in the cultivation of butternut squash are the availability of water and nutrients for the plant. One essential nutrient that plays a significant role in improving the quality of butternut squash yields is potassium, which is crucial in regulating the mechanisms of photosynthesis, carbohydrate translocation, and protein synthesis. Besides providing potassium nutrients, branch pruning is also necessary in cultivating butternut squash as it relates to the source and sink, which affects the process of translocating photosynthate to the entire plant body. The research was conducted in the planting fields of Kampung Labu Madu, Toyoresmi Village, Ngasem District, Kediri Regency, from January to June 2021. The study used a factorial experiment with two factors arranged in a split-plot design (RPT). The first factor (main plot) was branch pruning treatment (P) consisting of 2 levels, and the second factor (sub-plot) was the dose of KCl fertilizer (K) consisting of 4 levels. The results of the study showed significant effects on the P0 treatment (without pruning) on the parameter of the number of male flowers, and the parameter of the fruit weight with the best treatment being P1 (pruning). As for the KCl fertilizer dosage, it had a significant effect on the parameters of the number of female flowers, fruit weight per fruit, fruit weight per plant, with the best treatment being K3 (KCl 12 g/plant), and on the parameter of fruit sugar content with the best treatment being K2 (KCl 9 g/plant). Keywords: Butternut Squash (Cucurbita moschata Durch.), Branch Pruning, Dosage, KCl Fertilizer.
