Abstract

This study examines the implementation of cultural diplomacy in the Kurultáj festival, a cultural event that celebrates the diverse traditions and cultural heritage of nomadic ethnic groups from Central Asia or the Turko-Hun ethnicities. The aim of this research is to reveal how the festival implements cultural diplomacy and how it aligns with the typology of cultural diplomacy proposed by Zamorano (2016, p. 180). Employing a qualitative method based on six parameters, this study analyzes festival data from 2008 to 2022. The findings of this research disclose that the festival represents a manifestation of cultural diplomacy with a neo-propagandist tendency, yet it also contains elements of culturalism. The festival reflects Hungary's foreign policy strategy to strengthen relations with countries in the Central Asian region while fostering mutual understanding and social participation among diverse audiences. This research contributes to the academic literature on cultural diplomacy and its application in specific regions.
