Abstract

The New Right movement emerged as an alternative movement that offers a more comprehensive conservative view of traditional values from South Korea and criticism of the government that is considered too dependent on western interests and economic globalization. This movement is carried by small groups to political groups that have an interest in fighting for issues such as anti-globalization, nationalism, and social conservatism. In the last decade, the New Right movement in South Korea has managed to gain public support by utilizing important issues related to national identity, the spirit of nationalism, and assertiveness against foreign threats. This is also evident in the period from 2017 to 2022, during the Moon Jae-in administration, more and more South Koreans, especially young men, are turning into supporters of conservatism despite the existence of an increasingly progressive government. The research will focus on the reasons for the emergence of the New Right movement in South Korea in 2017-2022. This research uses an explanatory research method with data collection using secondary data through literature studies. Through this research, it can be concluded that the re-emergence of the New Right movement as a socio-political movement is due to the existence of political dissatisfaction felt by the South Korean people towards the existence of the phenomenon of globalization around them. In this case, the New Right tried to voice the political dissatisfaction felt by the community in various ways in an effort to encourage political change as a result of the phenomenon of globalization that arose in South Korea. As an opposition group to the Moon Jae-in administration that is known to be progressive, the New Right movement seeks to gain public support and legitimacy by criticizing, political rhetoric, using the media, and carrying out actions with the community on a matter. Keywords: New Right¸ Globalization, Nationalism, South Korea
