Abstract

Energy consumption has been increasing every year, leading to a depletion of existing fossil energy reserves, which necessitates the use of alternative renewable energy sources. Abundant availability of biomass presents a significant opportunity for developing renewable energy in Indonesia. As an agrarian country, Indonesia has a substantial production of corn and rice, which continues to grow annually. The increasing production also results in a rise in agricultural waste, particularly rice husks and corn cobs. This abundant biomass can be utilized to create biobriquettes, offering a significant opportunity for renewable energy development. The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of adding oxidizer (KMnO4) and the composition of corn cobs: rice husks to obtain optimal biobriquette quality during the manufacturing process. The research will involve roasting the materials and then refining them to 60 mesh. Oxidizer (KMnO4) will be added in different percentages: 0%, 3%, 5%, 10%, and 15% for each composition of corn cobs (%) : rice husks (%) - 0:100; 25:75; 50:50; 25:75; 100:0. Subsequently, they will be mixed with a binder and then molded. The research findings indicate that adding rice husks and oxidizer to the biobriquettes increases the moisture content and ash content, resulting in a decrease in calorific value. However, adding oxidizer leads to shorter ignition and flame durations, resulting in increased burning rates. The best biobriquette was obtained from the composition of 100% corn cobs with 3% oxidizer, which had a moisture content of 3.99%, ash content of 10%, a short ignition time of 20 seconds, a long burning time of 4089 seconds, a burning rate of 0.0017 gr/second, and a calorific value of 5002.6800 cal/gram, conforming to SNI standards.
