Abstract

Access to safe and clean drinking water is vital for the well-being of communities. Establishing an efficient drinking water treatment plant is essential to ensure the provision of high-quality potable water. This paper presents an abstract on the design and implementation of a drinking water treatment plant that utilizes Surabaya River in Gresik Regency as its raw water source. The primary objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive and reliable water treatment system capable of treating raw water from Surabaya River to meet the stringent drinking water standards set by local and national authorities. Extensive water quality assessments and analyses are conducted to identify potential contaminants and develop suitable treatment strategies. The drinking water treatment plant incorporates multiple treatment processes to effectively remove impurities and ensure the safety of the treated water. The treatment train consists of processes such as coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. Chemical coagulants and disinfectants are utilized to remove suspended particles, organic matter, and microorganisms present in the raw water. To address specific challenges associated with the quality of the raw water, advanced treatment techniques like activated carbon adsorption or membrane filtration may be integrated into the plant's design. These additional processes further enhance the removal of specific pollutants, ensuring compliance with strict water quality regulations. The implementation of the drinking water treatment plant provides several benefits, including improved public health outcomes by providing safe and potable water to the local population. It also contributes to reducing waterborne diseases and promoting overall well-being in the community. Sustainability and cost-effectiveness are considered in the design and operation of the drinking water treatment plant. Energy-efficient technologies and optimal resource utilization are incorporated to minimize operational costs and environmental impact. In conclusion, the establishment of a reliable drinking water treatment plant utilizing Surabaya River as the raw water source is crucial in ensuring access to safe and clean drinking water for the local community. This paper highlights the essential components and processes involved in developing an effective water treatment system that aligns with stringent drinking water quality standards, thereby enhancing the overall health and welfare of the population served.
