Abstract

The mosque is usually understood by most people as a house of worship, especially for prayer, when in fact the mosque has a function that is so broad than just for prayer. When referring to the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The mosque is the center of Muslim activity, namely worship, education, social and community activities. In this modern era it is also important to preserve and remind people about local culture. So it is necessary to design a container that is capable of being a place of worship as well as a means of knowledge with a contemporary appearance but does not leave local values behind. This mosque will be designed in Madiun. Previously, the city of Madiun was known as Purbaya. Purbaya was the center of government for the Kingdom of Gelang-Gelang which was a Javanese Kingdom as well as an Islamic Kingdom and had a close relationship with the Demak Kingdom which was influential in the spread of Islam in Madiun so that it has a lot of history. The city of Madiun is a city in East Java that preserves historical values in its architectural buildings, although not all levels of society apply them. Likewise with mosque buildings in Madiun, there are several large mosques that use traditional Javanese architectural styles that are well preserved. Seeing from these conditions, the theme to be achieved in designing the mosque this time is to be able to show or reintroduce mosques with Javanese architecture with new or contemporary nuances, so that they can be an attraction for visitors or worshipers to use and enjoy existing facilities. It is hoped that the design of the Grand Mosque using the Neo-Vernacular approach will not only restore the function of the mosque at the time of the Prophet which housed many religious activities, as well as a means of reintroducing local architecture, especially in Madiun.
