Abstract
Rice straw is a abundant lignocellulosic agricultural waste in Indonesia. As much as 31% of this waste generally used as animal feed, 7% for industrial use, and 62% burned in rice fields. This smoke can cause respiratory problems such as ARI and cancer. Lignocellulose itself is a polysaccharide consist of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. The lignin content in rice straw can be used as the production of edible film, thereby increasing its expediency and reducing the percentage of this waste burning in rice fields. Edible film is a thin layer that can be eaten and placed between food. The components of edible film are hydrocoloid / lipid / composite, filler, and plasticizer. The use of the addition of this plasticizing agent is to make edible film elastic. Filler added for modify the properties of the edible film to be produced. Examples of plasticizers and fillers are sorbitol and lignin. In this study, sorbitol and lignin were added to the cellulose biomass material derived from rice straw. These materials were mixed using a magnetic stirrer at speed of 400 rpm and in temperature 65oC for 25 minutes before the mixture was casted on a glass plate. After the edible film are casted and dried, tensile strength analysis and % degradation of edible film are carried out. The results showed tensile strength reducing of edible film with the lowest trend with the addition of 3% lignin and 9 ml sorbitol. Meanwhile degradation analysis showed that the % degradation value disposed to increase without the addition of lignin.
