Abstract
Ornamental plants that are grown as landscape elements in urban street medians must face the pollutant gas emissions by motor vehicles every day. Pollutants that enter the leaf tissue, may lead to changes in physiological and biochemical processes. Changes in the pigment content of leaves are one form of the resulting changes in the photochemical process. This study is a cross-sectional descriptive manner Explorative on 50 species of ornamental landscape plants. This type of ornamental plant is widely used as a garden and landscape element in Surabaya. Changes in leaf pigments examined are the change in total Cholorofil content and carotenoids. Tests on leaf pigment content performed by spectrophotometric method. The results showed changes in the pigment content of the leaves of ornamental plants grown as landscape elements median of the road, compared with control plants. The chlorophyll content of leaves is unchanged the average 35 % lower than the control plants, whereas the carotenoid content changed on average 37 %.
