Abstract

The application of critical and creative thinking since the elementary school level is very important, considering the two character profiles mentioned above are very much needed in realizing human resources who are ready to face challenges in the 21st-century era, by following the developments of the era of globalization and information to face the era of the Economic Community. Asia (MEA). These are things that most students have not imagined. Therefore, a learning approach is needed that encourages students to get used to thinking critically and creatively from an early age. The formulation of the problem raised in this research is the design of a board game teaching material to train critical and creative thinking skills of children aged 6-8 years. The type of research used is a descriptive qualitative analysis of interview data and observations on teaching staff in elementary schools located in Surabaya, and used as research primary data which is then used as a design basis. From the results of in-depth interviews and observations, it is concluded that schools are still not familiar with alternative learning facilities for children, so more references are needed on alternative teaching materials. In addition, early elementary school students still have difficulty learning calistung, so interactive and educational fun learning media are needed to increase children's enthusiasm for learning. From this, the formulation of the keyword "Belajar Calistung Melalui Alam" is obtained, which adapts the concept of learning for children of early school age, where they are still children who are in the transition period of learning and need the concept of playing and learning in their learning process, and it is hoped that the thematic concept raised in this design is able to stimulate children's interest in learning and make it easier for them to absorb learning. From the chosen nature thematic concept, the forest theme is the main concept chosen because of the diversity of learning objects used. In addition, the visual technique raised uses a handdrawing illustration style with children's book characteristics as a form of approach to children.
