Abstract

,Lately the use of two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles has been increasing over time. The use of these vehicles causes an increase in the amount of fuel demand which is high but as a result of the raw materials for vehicle fuels still using fossil materials which are not environmentally friendly causing air pollution. One of the environmentally friendly fuels is bioethanol which is ethanol or alcohol compounds obtained through the process of fermenting food ingredients containing starch or sugar with the help of microorganisms and one of the leading bioenergy that can reduce pollutant emissions. Therefore, research was carried out on the manufacture of bioethanol by hydrolysis and fermentation methods using raw cassava peels as an environmentally friendly fuel solution. Cassava peel contains starch which can be converted into glucose by hydrolysis using HCl catalyst and then fermented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce bioethanol. From this study it was found that the concentration of the catalyst used can affect the levels of bioethanol. Obtained bioethanol content that meets the standard as a fuel mixture, namely on the results of hydrolysis with glucose content of 26% using a 25% HCl catalyst obtained bioethanol content before distillation of 17.11% and after distillation of 66.13% on the 10th day of fermentation as the best result. Results of the GC-MS test (Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry) found that bioethanol has a wavelength which may indicate the presence of the OH- functional group or the presence of hydrogen bonds from the bioethanol raw material.
