Abstract

Indonesia is a country that is rich in mineral resources of laterite nickel ore. This ore is the main source of nickel metal that is widely used in the chemical industry, one of which is in the manufacture of stainless steel. One of the processing methods that can be carried out is the solid-liquid extraction process (leaching) under atmospheric conditions. In this study, nickel extraction was carried out from laterite nickel ore obtained from Sorowako using nitric acid as a solvent to determine the optimum conditions of temperature and concentration of nitric acid in the extraction process. This research was carried out at various operating temperatures of 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, 80°C, 90°C, and nitric acid concentrations of 3M, 4M, 5M, 6M, 7M. Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) was chosen to analyze the leaching solution which is then optimized using the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) method using the Minitab 19 application. This research showed that temperature and nitric acid concentration affected nickel recovery. The best result in the extraction process, which is the highest nickel extraction of 80.73% was obtained at a nitric acid concentration of 7M and a temperature of 90°C. After optimizing the results with the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) using the Minitab 19 application, the optimum nickel extraction was 80.8727% with optimum nitric acid concentration of 8.2 M and temperature of 98.5℃. Keywords: nitric acid, extraction, leaching, nickel, laterit
