Abstract

The generation of food waste is a serious problem that is being faced by several countries, including Indonesia. The average generation of food waste in a supermarket in Surabaya is 40.8 kg/day. Meanwhile, the food waste will end up in landfills which contribute greatly to the environmental impact of global warming. So this study aims to determine and compare the potential environmental impacts of four different food waste processing scenarios using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The scope of the scenario includes waste transportation, pre- treatment, and waste processing by means of gasification, composting, black soldier fly (BSF), and anaerobic digester. Based on the analysis results, the three biggest environmental impacts from the four scenarios are climate change, photochemical oxidant formation, and terrestrial acidification. Scenario 1 with waste processing using gasification shows the greatest impact value, especially on the impact of climate change and photochemical oxidant formation. Meanwhile, the largest terrestrial acidification impact value is shown in scenario 2 by processing food waste using composting. The best scenario with the smallest environmental impact is shown by scenario 3 by processing food waste using black soldier fly (BSF). Although for the impact of climate change scenario 3 shows a greater impact value than scenario 4.
