Abstract
The increase in the amount of household-scale mask waste is a new problem for the environment which can have a negative impact if it is not managed properly and the handlers are not paid attention to. It was found that Mulyorejo District is the are that contributes to the generation of the most mask waste in Surabaya, which also contains various problems related to its management. Facilities and infrastructure to support management are still limited and the low level of public awareness of the management of mask waste is a problem that deserves to be resolved. In this regard, the regional goverment through the Environmental Department plays a role in carrying out mandatory matters in the environmental sector, including realizing proper and correct management of mask waste. This study aims to identify and describe the role of the Environmental Department in managing mask waste in Mulyorejo District, Surabaya City. This study uses a qualitative descriptive methode with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, observation and documentation. The results show that the Environmental Department has carried out its role as stated in the Mayor of Surabaya Regulation Number 79 of 2021 but is not optimal. This is because there are still some weaknesses in the role of providers of facilities and infrastructure related to procurement of mask waste handling facilities. In addiction to the role of community empowerment, the implementation of counseling is considered less intensive. So that it is necessary to increase the goverment's role in ensuring the availability of facilities and infrastructure as well as providing counseling and assistance on a massive and sustained basis.
