Abstract
Ethnic marriage is a form of relationship between men and women who come from two different ethnic groups/races. Inter-ethnic marriages that occur of course go through many previous adaptation processes that exceed the process of adapting one-ethnic marriages, especially in terms of language and daily communication styles. The purpose of this study was to determine how the communication patterns formed in inter-ethnic marriages between Javanese and Minang ethnic groups. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method using the theory of family communication patterns belonging to Joseph A. Devito. The data acquisition method used was an in-depth interview with four pairs of informants. The results of this study are that the Minang ethnicity as a minority culture will merge with the Javanese ethnicity as the majority culture. Javanese culture is also often known to be more flexible and allows it to blend into other cultures. According to a Javanese man, the pattern of communication that occurs after he marries a Minang woman has proven that what has been the wrong stereotype about the Minang ethnicity is someone who is stingy, loud-spoken, stubborn, and domineering. In fact, this Minang ethnic woman has an independent personality, is good at managing the household, good at cooking, and good at trading. In the pattern of parenting, the four marriage partners of different ethnic Javanese and Minang tend to be balanced because they use religion as a mediator, and culture does not contribute much, it's just that children still need to know their cultural roots.
