Abstract
ABSTRACT Issues related to gender equality and masculinity inherent in women are still crucial in society. This study aims to see how the representation of Disney Princess masculinity in the Live Action Film Mulan. The Live Action film Mulan is not only a simple Disney film as in general which tells the life of a princess who is gentle, sweet, obedient, humble, and other features of feminism, but in this film there is a bigger, deeper story, namely that the Live Film Action Mulan wants to break male domination in China where men are always considered superior to women by presenting the side of masculinity in one of the female figures in the Disney princess character. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach with the semiotic method of Roland Barthes. From the results of the research that has been done, the representation of Disney princess masculinity can be seen from the elements of appearance, clothing or costumes, make up, environment, gesture, and expression. Mulan's character is described as a princess who is good at riding horses, can lead the course of war, use weapons well, and can protect and save fellow soldiers, Emperors, and dynasties. Mulan does not need a prince like a princess in general because Mulan can be a reliable princess. The findings show that there has been a moderate shift in the depiction of classic princesses to contemporary princesses. The image of contemporary Princess is more like a beautiful and superior female figure represented by Mulan's character. Mulan has a more balanced depiction of masculinity and femininity. Key words: Mulan Live Action Film, Disney princess, Representation, Masculinity.
