Abstract

Calcinite fertilizer or commonly called calcium nitrate fertilizer is a fertilizer that contains two main nutrients, namely calcium nutrients and nitrogen nutrients in the form of nitrate. Calcium plays a role as a plant micronutrient and plays an important role, especially for the formation and regeneration of plant cells, improving fruit quality and extending the shelf life of the fruit produced. The element nitrogen plays an important role in leaf development, helps the process of photosynthesis so that the capacity of food processing by plants is optimal. The process used in the manufacture of calcinite fertilizer uses calcination and precipitation processes. Calcination is the process of heating a limestone by using little or no oxygen for the thermal decomposition process. Calcination in the fertilizer manufacturing process aims to eliminate organic components and convert calcium carbonate (CaCO3) compounds into calcium oxide (CaO) which is used as a calcium (Ca) precursor. Prior to the calcination process, the raw material for calcinite fertilizer, namely beef bones, is cleaned of the remnants of fat and dirt which is then finely ground to become a powder. The beef bone powder is then put into the furnace for a calcination process with a temperature ratio of 600°C, 650°C, 700°C, 750°C and 800°C for 4 hours. After the calcination process was carried out, it was followed by a precipitation process by reacting the calcined beef bone powder with a solution of nitric acid with a concentration ratio of 1N, 2N, 3N, 4N and 5N. Precipitation is a method of deposition of each basic material with a reactant, which in this process uses nitric acid (HNO3) as the reactant. The final process is filtering and drying. This study gives optimum results at a calcination temperature of 800°C with a concentration of 5N, the CaO content is 70.81% and the N content is 49.6%. The composition of calcinite fertilizer based on the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) has a minimum CaO content of 26% and a minimum N of 15%. Keywords: beef bone, nitric acid, calcium nitrate fertilizer, calcination, precipitation.
