Abstract
The lack of public knowledge about the potential of Styrofoam has resulted in the accumulation of this difficult-to-decompose waste being increasingly neglected. This research was conducted to reduce pollutants caused by styrofoam waste and also because of the excess of styrofoam that can be used as a binder material, as well as to add insight into alternative materials in asphalt mixtures. It is expected that the flexible pavement mixture using 60/70 penetration asphalt with the addition of styrofoam can improve the quality of the pavement during Marshall testing. In this study, Marshall testing was used to calculate the stability and flow values obtained from the flexible pavement mixture on 60/70 penetration asphalt with a mixture of styrofoam as an additional material for flexible pavement. In this study, fifteen specimens were made to determine the optimum asphalt content at a percentage of 4%, 5%, and 6%. The addition of styrofoam of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 3% (five specimens each) and fifteen specimens for the immersion test in the time span of 1 hour, 12 hours, and 24 hours. The results of the study showed a mixture of asphalt with the addition of styrofoam causes an increase in the stability value of the asphalt mixture. The optimum value was obtained at 1% addition of styrofoam with a stability value of 1666 kg, a flow of 3.16 mm, a Marshall Quotient (MQ) of 527,216 kg/mm, a VIM of 4.7961%, a VMA of 20.1485%, and a VFA of 76.214%. Keywords: Styrofoam, asphalt additives, stability, flow
