Abstract
The tempe industry is an industry that produces liquid waste containing high organic compounds resulting from the washing and boiling of soybeans. Tempe industry liquid waste can cause environmental pollution if it is not processed before being discharged into the environment. This research uses coffee grounds as an adsorbent to reduce COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and TSS (Total Suspended Solid) levels in liquid waste from the tempe industry through a batch adsorption process using a shaker. The aim of this research is to analyze the quality of activated carbon from coffee grounds as an adsorbent for reducing COD and TSS levels in liquid waste from the tempe industry. In addition, to analyze the optimum dose and effectiveness of coffee grounds activated carbon based on variations in adsorbent dose and length of contact time for the adsorption process, The variables used in this research were the adsorbent dose, namely 4 grams/250 ml; 6 grams/250 ml; 8 grams/250 ml, and contact time 20 minutes; 30 minutes; 40 minutes; 50 minutes; 60 minutes at a speed of 100 rpm. The research results showed that the coffee grounds dregs adsorbent was obtained from a carbonization process at a temperature of 600ºC, which was activated with 0,1 M HCl and sieved with a size of 100 mesh. A dose of 8 grams/250 ml is the optimum dose for reducing COD and TSS levels in tempe industrial liquid waste, with the effectiveness of reducing COD levels by 60% and TSS levels by 78% with a contact time of 40 minutes, following the Freundlich isotherm equation with an R2 value of 0,9951 for BOD and 0,9817 for TSS.
