Abstract

Leachate, a byproduct of water infiltrates landfill sites, contains high amounts of organics, acids, metals, and dissolved salts, posing environmental risks. Due to leachate can be hazardous and there are few remediation alternatives, researchers are exploring leachate reduction methods using decomposing organisms like Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. This research investigates BSF larvae's ability to degrade a mixture of leachate and substrates, examine larval growth, determine the final C/N ratio of residues, and assess the protein content of larvae produced after 12 days of maintenance using various leachate solvent levels (75%, 50%, 25%, and 0%) and different substrate types (bran, tofu residue, and a combination of both). The results demonstrate a correlation between substrate type and leachate solvent levels with the reductions achieved, larval growth, compost quality, and BSF larval protein content. Optimal BSF larval performance was observed in degrading the mixture of leachate and substrate, with the highest weight reduction (58.83%) in the bran and tofu residue mixture with 0% leachate solvent. The final C/N ratio met the SNI composting standard, with the lowest value (14.91%) in the bran and tofu residue mixture with 0% leachate solvent. The combination of bran and tofu residue with 0% leachate solvent yielded the highest larval protein content (63.20%). This research highlights the potential of BSF larvae as an effective solution for reducing leachate and substrate mixtures, producing high-quality compost, and providing nutritious feed for aquaculture.
