Abstract
The presence of oil and grease in restaurant wastewater is one of the most challenging pollutants to be removed. Restaurant wastewater was chosen due to its high pollutant loads characteristics such as COD, oil & grease, nitrogen, and phosphate. This work utilizes the Lactobacillus sp bacteria consortium to degrade oil and grease in wastewater. The reactor used in this study were grease trap and Sequencing Batch Reactor. SBR was chosen due to its high efficiency, shock loading resistance, operational flexibility, land savings, and easy integration with other treatment processes. The bacterial consortium was applied to the Grease Trap aerobically. Different treatment conditions such as hydraulic retention time (HRT) and aeration rate, were used to figure out the optimal condition of SBR. The combination of pre-treatment and SBR provided different aerobic and anaerobic conditions, significantly removing pollutant parameters. The activity of the bacterial consortium was analyzed to determine its effectiveness in removing pollutant loads in wastewater. The results of this study showed that, at a 24-hour retention time and 14 L/minute aeration rate, the bacterial consortium was able to remove oil and grease by 97.42%, compared to the conventional Grease Trap which removed only 84.54%. The addition of the bacterial consortium resulted in a higher reduction of other pollutant parameters.
