Abstract
Factory of formic acid from methyl formate and water using hydrolysis process with a capacity of 55,000 tons/year, is planned to be built in the Manyar area, Gresik Regency, East Java, to be precise in the Java Integrated Industrial Area Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE). In the Textile Industry, Formic Acid used as a mixture of dyestuff processing. Besides that, Formic Acid is used for the Leather Industry as an ingredient to neutralize lime and as a disinfectant in the pharmaceutical industry. Formic Acid in quantity to a lesser extent, Formic Acid is also used as an intermediate ingredient pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. This factory will operate for 330 days in a year. Briefly, the process of making formic acid begins with reacting 96.5% methyl formate and water in the reactor. Conversion reaction up to 60%. The products formed in the reactor are formic acid and methanol then flowed into the flash drum to be partially separated into vapor to separate the unreacted methyl formate. Then the liquid is fed to Distillation Tower 1 to be separated between formic acid-water as bottom product and methyl formate-methanol as the top product. Top results from Tower Distillation 1 is purified by distillation in the Distillation Tower 2 with methanol bottom yield of 99.8% as a by-product from the factory. Results bottom of Distillation Tower 1 is fed to the Extractor to be separated from the acid format with ethyl acetate solvent. Extract product from Extractor then purified in Distillation Tower 3 with the bottom product being formic acid with 99% purity as the main product from the factory
