Abstract

The present work evaluates and optimizes the CO2 absorption in a bubble column with sodium silicate solutions. The solution has the capacity to absorb carbon dioxide gas in addition to serving as the end product of absorption. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with three-factor Box-Behnken design was used to examine the interactive effects of the sodium silicate concentration, flow rate and gas–liquid contact time on CO2 absorption performance in bubble column. The gas flow rate, sodium silicate concentration and contact time were crucial factors in preventing the formation of silica precipitates in bubble column. The precipitate product was analyze using XRD to determine the absorbed carbon dioxide gas. The results of three-dimensional plots revealed that the interactive effect of gas–liquid contact time and flow rate had the greatest influence on these responses. The optimum condition was achieved under working condition with a concentration of 0.6% v/v, a gas flow rate of 2L/min, and a contact time of 6 minutes with a precipitate product containing 51.32% sodium carbonate. Key words: CO2 absorption; optimization; RSM
