Abstract
The problem of making latex (natural rubber)-cellulose composites is due to the low particle dispersion due to the opposing nature of the two, therefore a coupling agent is needed to improve the homogeneity between the two. Cellulose-g-latex is used as a coupling agent which aims to determine its effect in the resulting composite. There are two stages in the process of making composites namely compounding and vulcanizing. Cellulose with variables of 25, 30 and 40 phr and coupling agent with variables 0, 1, 3 and 5 phr along with other ingredients are ground with an Open Mill machine, then vulcanized in a Vulcanizing Press machine at a temperature of 1500C for a certain time, then an analysis of physical properties and morphology. In the hardness test the best results were obtained with a variable 30 phr cellulose composite and 1 phr coupling agent for 70 ShoreA. The best tensile strength is in the variable 25 phr cellulose and 1 phr coupling agent is 11 MPa. The best elongation at break is in the variable 30 phr cellulose and 1 phr coupling agent material by 580%. The best tear strength and rebound resilience are found in the variable 30 phr of cellulose without a coupling agent of 30.9 MPa and 69.6%, respectively. Based on the results of physical and morphological analysis, it can be concluded that cellulose-g-latex has been shown to influence the occurrence of intermolecular bonds between the natural rubber matrix and cellulose fillers.
