Abstract
The activities on the East Coast of Surabaya, such as fishery, has reduced the function of mangrove land so that the quality of the waters from the rivers of estuary then to the sea can decrease. This study aims to determine the quality of estuary waters and relation with mangrove density. The method uses purposive random sampling and line plot method with a 10x10 meter plot to determine mangrove density and physicchemical parameters for water quality. The results analysis of water quality in the estuary of the east coast Surabaya with optimum values at station 5 with parameter value of temperature (29°C), brightness (22 cm), current speed (0.083 m/sec), TSS (55 mg/L), pH (7.36), salinity (5.5), DO (1.709 mg/L), COD (42.4 mg/L), nitrate (0.18 mg/ L), and phosphate (1,045 mg/L). The mangrove density level at each station includes stations 1-2 low density, stations 3-4 medium density, and station 5 dense density. The relation mangrove density affects the quality water of physic-chemical parameters showed correlation value (r) that, brightness (0.556), salinity (0.635) with positive values, if higher mangrove density, higher brightness and salinity too. Temperature (-0.555) and COD (-0.580) affect mangrove density with a negative value or inversely, if higher mangrove density, then lower temperature and COD parameters. Estuarine waters that have the most effect on physic-chemical parameters are salinity parameters 40.3%, COD 33.7%, brightness 30.9%, temperature 30.8% depending on mangrove density.
