Abstract

NABILA DOVI PUTRI INSANI. Representation of Racial Discrimination in the Hidden Figures Movie Scene (Analysis Study of Representation of Racial Discrimination in the Hidden Figures Movie Scene). This study uses mass media in the form of films to be analyzed. The film that is used as the object of research is Hidden Figures. The purpose of this study focuses on the representation of racial discrimination that occurs in the Hidden Figures movie scene. The difference in treatment given by skin people based on skin color is a form of racial discrimination. The research method used to represent racial discrimination uses the John Fiske model analysis method, which consists of the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. John Fiske explained about semiotics which is the basis of the level of reality, representation and ideology in the form of signs or more often referred to as code television. The results obtained are six scenes that are the focus of research in the Hidden Figures film which represent racial discrimination which is divided into the level of reality, the level of representation, and the level of ideology. In these six scenes, white people commit racial discrimination at the level of reality in how to dress between different white people, the level of representation of the separation of the use of public facilities, and at the ideological level there is a pattern of thinking that black people will always cause problems. Racial discrimination was a crime in the past because race is a gift from birth, and discrimination should have ended regardless of the color of the person's skin.. Keywords: Representation, Discrimination, Hidden Figure Movies, Semiotics
